What would happen if one day 2% of the population just disappeared? What would people do to search for meaning, to try to explain the inexplicable? By the same creator as Watchmen, it is possible to see how the storytelling skills that resulted in the perfect Watchmen were honed in The Leftovers. Often painful – no one is perfect, lots of poor choices are made, people cope any way they can – the story is about grief and loss, home and family, with all of its mess and heartbreak, with a dose of uncertainty about what is real and what is madness and constant explorations of how people create/impose their own meaning and faith on the inexplicable. The first season is grim and has problems, but the series hits its stride in season two and the final season is excellent.
