Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Emo Score?
The Emo Score is how much effort, (emotional or intellectual) a show takes to watch. A low emo score means that the show is fluff and doesn’t require much effort; it can be watched at the end of a long, hard day and it will be like a warm bath. A high emo score means that the show will ask something of the viewer; a 10 means “brace yourself.” I try to put why whenever a score is above a 5.
A Note on Ratings
I only review a show if I’ve watched at least one entire season, so most shows listed I liked enough to watch that long. Anything 5 or above is watchable, although a 5 is “it was okay, I guess.” 6 is good, 7-8 is very good, and 9 is excellent. 10 is the best of the best.
What is this “Sanctuary Moon” thing?
In a favorite book series (The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells – check it out), the main character reacts to stressful situations by watching and rewatching a show called The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. A “Sanctuary Moon” rating means that the show lends itself to multiple rewatchings and can be a security blanket of sorts. Sanctuary Moon shows aren’t always the best, just easily familiar. Because of the comfort factor, most of these shows are comedies rather than dramas, but they are the shows that I keep coming back to again and again.
Do you keep track of what shows are on what services?
Heck, no! If the show was originally produced by a streaming service (like Amazon or Netflix) or a channel that has a streaming service (like Peacock for NBC or HBO) I will note who originally produced the show, but I can’t and don’t keep track of where shows can be found. Also, many (most?) shows don’t have a related channel, so keep that in mind when filtering.
