This short series, created by and starring Michaela Coel is gripping, difficult, and thought provoking. A young woman in London, out for a night with a friend, is sexually assaulted – not that she remembers it well since she was drugged by her assailant. The series shows her as she comes to grips with what happened and explores the notion of consent and assault in various forms. If that seems boring and sanctimonious, it’s not. The lead character is often not likeable, her choices often questionable. Her friends have their own problems and their own journeys – messy and difficult and filled with nuance. But the characters and story are deftly drawn, and excellently acted, and this is deeply compelling tv.
