This incredibly bingeable show with its half-hour episodes caused me to make bad decisions about how late to stay up. I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next. Serious, studious Emma and playboy Dexter meet on graduation night in 1988 and spend the night and part of the next day together. Despite their obvious mutual attraction, they decide to be friends. Each episode catches up with them a year from their first meeting, following their separate and mutual ups and downs. They each struggle with what to do with their lives, with varying failures and successes and false starts. Their friendship waxes and wanes, as does their mutual attraction. The only reason I’m not giving this a 10 is that while I bought Dex’s attraction to Emma, sometimes I wasn’t sure what she saw in him. Not a frothy rom-com – there are funny parts and sad parts and difficult parts. Like life.
