This series is set shortly before TOS and overlaps with TOS characters. It is the first series to not concentrate on the captain and bridge crew, instead the main character is Michael (female) Burnham, a previously promising officer who in the pilot mutinies against her captain (Michelle Yeoh). For reasons that are never well explained, Burnham is plucked out of jail to serve on the Discovery, an experimental vessel that can instantly jump through space. Burnham is the foster daughter of Sarek and Amanda—she is Spock’s foster sister and the show loves revisiting familiar characters from TOS. There are a lot of problems with this show– it spends so much time on nostalgic fan service that most of the characters are not well developed, the plots have holes big enough to fly a space ship through and it has to bend over backward to explain ALL of the disconnects between this show and other Star Treks, particularly TOS.
