The tale of a longtime con artist and grifter, whose biggest con was “the Dale” a three-wheeled fuel-efficient car in the 1970s. Described by everyone as deeply convincing and delusional – she is an interesting character. What made it more interesting, and confused the issue, was that she was a male-to-female transexual, which was highly unusual in the 1970s. The way she was treated, particularly by the press in terms of her gender identity is infuriating and became a major point of the trial and its aftermath, which confuses the fact that she was in fact a professional con artist and criminal.
