Octavia Spencer stars as Poppy, a NY Times journalist turned true crime podcaster. Poppy has recently returned to the Bay Area, where she grew up and where her family lives, and each season presents a different mystery that she aims to solve. Poppy can be a frustrating character – she has a tendency to fixate on her own goals without any care to those around her. Despite warnings from colleagues, friends and family she bulldozes her way through people’s lives and always seems surprised when things go wrong. That said, the stories and characters are interesting. I particularly like Poppy’s father, the leader of a Black motorcycle gang.
