What TV To Watch

Show Genre: Comedy

Schitt’s Creek

Endearing show about a wealthy family that loses everything and has to move to a small town where they live in two rooms in a rundown motel.  It’s hard to put a finger on what is so great about this – the family members are unapologetically who they are: self-centered and delusional. As they navigate …

Ted Lasso

This smart, heartwarming, and very funny show follows American football coach Ted Lasso when he is hired to be the coach for a mediocre Premier League soccer team in London.  At first I resisted, worried that it would be all about the sports and wacky fish-out-of-water hijinks, which didn’t interest me. But this is all …

People of Earth

Strange comedy about a reporter (Wyatt Cenac) who reluctantly goes to a small town to do a piece on people who have been abducted by aliens.  It soon becomes clear that he is also an “experiencer.” Told from the point of view of the human group and also a workplace comedy aboard the alien ship.  …

Hacks

An aging comedy Las Vegas superstar, compellingly played by Jean Smart, struggles to maintain relevance. Someone has the idea to pair her with an edgy, self-centered young screenwriter from LA.  The young screenwriter is insufferable and unlikeable, but that is offset by the eccentric intensity and great wit of the older comedian. The two spark …

The story of an irrepressible optimist who was kidnapped at fifteen and held in an underground bunker until she was saved when she was in her twenties.  Once out of the bunker, she moves to NYC where she finds a flamboyant roommate, a crazy landlady and a self-involved boss.  So funny.  Season 2 was funny …

The Tick

Clever comedy about a superhero dressed as an insect (or maybe he IS an insect) befriending a mild-mannered man named Arthur.  They band together to fight crime. Smart and very funny, it finds comedy in surprising places.

Resident Alien

An alien, played with gusto by Alan Tudyk, crash lands on Earth and has to pretend to be a human.  He is not particularly good at it.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Initially an Andy Samberg vehicle, this comedy with its ensemble cast follows the detectives of Brooklyn’s 99th Precinct.  It is unpredictable and intelligently funny.  Andre Braugher stands out as straight-man Captain Holt.

The Great

This series has the tagline “an occasionally true story.”  It is a highly fictionalized, raunchy satirical comedy that (vaguely) tells the story of the idealistic young woman who would become Catherine the Great and her marriage to the boorish man-child Peter III.  The parallels between first season Peter III and a certain US President are …
