Miss Scarlett & The Duke

Another in a long list of shows that have a police detective semi-unwillingly assisted by (and assisting) a plucky female amateur detective.  In this one, set in Victorian England, the plucky woman is Miss Eliza Scarlett, a private detective, and the detective is William Wellington of Scotland Yard – sometimes called “Duke” because of his …

The Bear

Award-winning chef Carmine returns to Chicago to run a neighborhood dive restaurant left to him by his brother. Problems abound — from personnel issues to money problems to resistance to change, Carmine’s life is a constant hardship.  But it is a great show, as we follow Carmine and the people around him as they try …

Gaslit

A star-studded story of the Watergate scandal, focusing on Martha Mitchell, John Dean and G. Gordon Liddy. Fictionalized, it is an examination of political loyalty taken to an extreme and what causes some to finally come forward with the truth. Very timely since I watched it during the January 6 Committee Hearings.

Slow Horses

A group of MI5 agents are banished to a backwater office for various failings.  Their irascible boss, played to perfection by Gary Oldman, doesn’t seem like much, but he’s a canny old spy who’s better than he seems.  When a young man is kidnapped by a group of ultra-nationalists, the group (the slow horses) are …

Severance

When the first season of this show ended I immediately went back to the beginning and watched the entire season again, it was that good. Our protagonists work for a mysterious company that allows some workers to completely sever their work life from their personal life – their work persona (their “Innie”) has no knowledge …

Peacemaker

After the events of The Suicide Squad (great movie), Peacemaker is recruited to join a group of off-the-books spies investigating nefarious goings on. It’s a comedy, but wasn’t quite as funny as I thought it would be, especially given the very funny dance sequence opening credits. Deals with what is acceptable in the fight against …

The Gilded Age

What a waste this show is – a waste of an excellent cast and an eye-popping costume budget. This story of old money vs new money has some decent elements, but the script falls flat with most of the characters being completely one-dimensional, showing no nuance or growth. We leave season one much as we …

Kevin Can F**k Himself

This dramedy is about the disturbing flipside of the “boorish husband-long suffering wife” comedy trope (e.g. King of Queens, Mike & Molly etc). When Kevin (the husband) is in the room the lighting is bright, the filming sticks to the three-camera comedy trope and there is a laugh track; but the moment he leaves, the …

Yellowjackets

Twenty years ago a plane with a high school girls soccer team crashed in the Canadian Rockies. In an initial scene we see a flashback from the woods, and it is not pretty – there is a bizarre ritual and implied cannibalism. In present day, three of the survivors are living their lives when some …

All Creatures Great and Small

This charming remake of the story of a veterinarian in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1930s is sweet and lovely. They added a female housekeeper as an important character to relieve the overly male vibe of the original, and it doesn’t hew completely to the books, but it is well done and comfortable.
