What TV To Watch

Show Genre: Drama

Doctor Thorne

A perfectly serviceable adaptation of a Trollope novel. Filled with snobbish people, young love, revenge and family secrets.

Bridgerton

Adapted from a popular series of romantic novels, this series as adapted by Shonda Rhimes integrates Black characters (almost) without comment.  A cheeky interpretation (many of the scenes are backed by “classical” versions of modern pop songs. Intrigue and romance, love thwarted, scheming mamas, gamblers and opera singers and innocent ladies – all narrated by …

The Morning Show

Drama about the fallout after the beloved long-time host of a network morning news show is discovered to have been a sexual predator.  Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Anniston lead the great cast in this show about complicity, deception (including self-deception), and the harm caused.

Anne with an “E”

A retelling of the beloved Anne of Avonlea books – this time with a bit of a darker underbelly.  It’s fine – it doesn’t sugarcoat how hard Anne’s life must have been before joining the Cuthberts, and takes some creative license with embellishing those hardships.  That said, it doesn’t really break any new ground.

Daredevil

Part of the Defenders group of mild super hero shows. I barely got through Season 1.  I know that some people liked this show, but I wasn’t one of them.  I find this character and his story boring.

The Defenders

Part of the Defenders group of mild super hero shows, this one gathers all of the heroes – Jessica Jones (yay), Luke Cage (yay), Daredevil (snooze) and Iron Fist (blech) together for an all-out war against a Big Bad.  The problem is that the story largely revolves around Iron Fist, by far the least interesting …

Upon her return, Johnson calls herself “The OA”, exhibits scars on her back, and …

Riviera

Full disclosure, I only watched this because there is an actor I like in one of the seasons. This show follows Georgiana (Julia Stiles), the art historian wife of a hugely wealthy Mediterranean business tycoon.  When he dies at the beginning of the series, Georgiana begins learning uncomfortable truths about her husband and she goes …
