The Nevers

Oh, how I wanted to like this show; oh, how I did not like this show. On the page it has all the elements – strong female leads, steampunk Victorian era, mysteries and derring do.  But it failed – there were too many characters, too many plot threads, too much going on to really follow …

Watchmen

The first few episodes are so confusing the only reaction can be “dafuq???” But it is compelling, with interesting characters, so hang on – the pieces start fitting together and wrap up in a perfect egg of a story.  Worth the price of admission just to learn about the Black Marshall – Bass Reeves, who …

Orphan Black

Our entry to this story is Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany), a punk chic who witnesses someone step in front of a train – but that person looks exactly like Sarah.  Sarah soon meets Alison (Tatiana Maslany) and Cosima (Tatiana Maslany) and she learns that they are clones, part of an illegal experiment.  Together, along with …

Jessica Jones

Part of the Defenders group of mild super hero shows. Gritty, hard-drinking female superhero surrounded by interesting female characters.  It starts slow, stick with it. Season One featured one of the creepiest villains ever, played by the charming David Tennant.  Season Two suffered by comparison without a great villain. Seasons Two and Three did not …

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Witty, funny, clever, sexy – while Season 1 starts off slow, this story of a vampire slayer and her friends as they navigate high school while dodging demons, vampires and popular girls is a true icon of geekdom.  Awesome in every way and a geek cultural touchstone. Sexy British vampires!

Battlestar Galactica

The best “hard” science fiction series ever made IMO. After years of peace, the robot Cylons return with a vengeance to wipe out humanity.  This time there are twelve models who look like humans.  The remnants of the human race take to the stars, protected by the last remaining battlestar – Galactica.  Gritty, political, tough, …

Angel

Sequel to Buffy the Vampire Slayer – not quite as clever, not quite as engaging, a little darker, but still witty and fun entertainment. It doesn’t stand on its own – one has to have seen Buffy first.

Firefly

Fourteen almost perfect, canceled-too-soon episodes.  Great characters, clever writing, funny, witty, cowboys in space.  This is the story of a scrappy band of smugglers/petty criminals out on the raggedy edge of space. Full of memorable quotes – enjoy these big damn heroes. The sequel movie “Serenity” is also a must watch, a lot more emo …

Game of Thrones

Complex, gory, violent, riveting story of political intrigue in the fantasy land of Westeros.  Filled with fascinating characters, twists and turns and dragons.  Unlike many, I thought the ending was fine. Winter is coming.

Black Mirror

Each episode is a stand-alone that shows a different dystopian future.  Each of the episodes explores an aspect of technology taken to a frightening/disturbing outcome.  Excellently done, compelling, thought provoking and very difficult to watch.  Not recommended for bingeing.
